The tour starts very early, usually two to three hours before sunrise. This timing is important. During the night, large sardine schools gather in the waters off Istria. Sardine fishing boats use strong reflectors to attract plankton, which then attracts sardines. At dawn, the sardine fishermen surround the schools with purse seine nets. This movement also attracts bluefin tuna. Early in the morning we often begin fishing directly near the sardine boats, where the tuna are actively feeding.
The atmosphere at sunrise on the Adriatic is something special. The sea is calm, the light is soft, and the entire fishing ground slowly comes alive. It is not unusual to see dolphins around the sardine boats. Then, when the reel suddenly starts screaming and the line runs out under pressure, the experience becomes unforgettable.
Fishing method
During the day, Tuna Pro uses chunking and chumming to attract bluefin tuna to the boat. This means creating a steady feeding trail in the water. The goal is to bring the tuna closer and encourage them to bite. Our boat is equipped with a special grinder and sardine dispenser so we can maintain a consistent bait trail while fishing.
Another productive method is fishing near trawlers. Trawlers work the Adriatic seabed and often bring up a wide variety of marine life. Large bluefin tuna frequently follow these boats, waiting for parts of the sorted catch to be thrown back into the sea. When conditions are right, we feed and fish close to these trawlers. In many cases this can take us far offshore, sometimes into international waters between the Croatian and Italian coast.
